The Lake District is home to iconic lakes, as well as smaller tarns and vital rivers. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the region’s waterways hold immense ecological significance.

The Lake District National Park provides 40% of the drinking water for the North West of England every day of the year.

Phosphorus levels threaten ecosystems, putting lakes and rivers at risk from harmful algal blooms and non-native invasive species. By taking proactive measures now we can help to prevent further degradation of water quality. Investment will help us deliver solutions to have an immediate impact on water quality in our lakes.  [/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Back to Business Investments >>[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]

Clean Water Community Grant Scheme

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Intervention

We are looking for investors who want to invest in community-led projects that work to improve water quality.

Methodology

We will work with your business to develop specific grant criteria on any aspect of biodiversity. For example, grants to support communities to: develop grasslands, plant native species, reduce carbon outputs; increase recycling; conserve water; develop green infrastructure; improve sustainable transport. The Lake District Foundation will administer and promote the programme, engage with communities, and measure impact.

Technology & Innovation

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Our lakes and rivers are experiencing increasing water quality challenges. We know that within this context, new ideas, innovation, and technology could provide the radical solutions necessary to transform the health of our water.

Intervention

We are looking for green pioneers to invest in our Innovation Fund. The fund will support the research, development, and testing of innovative products, ideas, and technology. Investment will ensure we are ready to invest and capitalise on new opportunities.

Methodology

We will invite innovators to showcase products and ideas. Key stakeholders across the Lake District will determine which emerging technologies and innovations have potential to make an impact on water quality. Selected products will be tested in a safe environment and once proven effective, will be implemented at scale.

Impact

Investment needed:

£5,000/ £10,000/ £20,000+ pledges to finance emerging innovation.

The aim is to catalyse long-term behaviour change to improve water quality and support sustained implementation of locally driven solutions

Methodology

In collaboration with partners, we will deliver an eco-schools education and engagement programme. Eco school leaders across lake catchment areas will be trained to educate children and young people about water quality, solutions, and tangible actions they can take to protect the lake.

Big Windermere Survey

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Windermere is an iconic lake of significant ecological importance and is the centrepiece of the UNESCO Lake District World Heritage site. Water quality in Windemere is under threat from a high-level nutrient inputs and bacterial pollution. There is a need to generate ongoing data to increase scientific understanding of water quality at Windermere and support the development of initiatives to improve the condition of the lake.

The Intervention

The Big Windermere Survey is a flagship community science initiative delivered by the Freshwater Biological Association. It brings together volunteers, professional scientists, and catchment managers to help bring an understanding of the health of the lake to a wider audience, highlighting challenges and finding solutions.

Methodology

Citizen scientists are trained to collect water samples from approximately 100 separate locations on Windermere and in the rivers and lakes that flow into it. The samples are analysed for nutrient and bacterial concentrations at independent laboratories, producing the largest, one-day snapshot of conditions in Windermere. The survey takes place 4 times per year

Impact

Investment opportunities:

£100,000 whole programme sponsorship for 1 year

£35,000/survey

£10,000 engagement events to share findings and long-term trends from survey
