Join the fight against pollution

Boaters, we need you to join the fight against pollution and help keep or rivers and lakes fit for people and wildlife.

Here’s the three main things to remember:

  1. We all know that fuel, oils and chemicals are bad for water quality. Take care to prevent spills, and manage any accidents by following the advice here.
  2. Sewage is a significant problem but can easily be solved by following the guidance here – and remember – Pump Out Don’t Dump!
  3. Invasive species can quickly invade an area and are then very hard to remove, disrupting the ecosystem and causing chaos for native and local wildlife. Check Clean and Dry to prevent the spread of INNS.
    • Check your equipment and clothing for live organisms – particularly in areas that are damp or hard to inspect.
    • Clean and wash all equipment, footwear and clothing thoroughly. If you do come across any organisms, leave them at the water body where you found them
    • Dry all equipment and clothing – some species can live for many days in moist conditions. Make sure you don’t transfer water elsewhere.

Did You Know?

It’s not just boats that can carry unwanted invasive species, anyone using the water, such as SUPers and wild swimmers – we all need to check, clean and dry our kit.
