A bit about Herdwicks
Herdwick sheep are an iconic breed native to the Lake District, celebrated for their resilience and importance to the region’s farming heritage. Known for their hardiness, Herdwicks thrive in the challenging upland conditions of the fells, grazing on rough pastures. Their distinctive wool, which is coarse and durable, has been traditionally used for carpets and tweeds. Herdwicks are also famous for their ability to “heft”—a learned behaviour passed down through generations where sheep instinctively stay within their home territory without the need for fences. This breed, deeply tied to the area’s cultural identity, was championed by Beatrix Potter, who worked to preserve their legacy and ensure their continued presence in the region.
