Visit and Volunteer
Come for the views. Leave something good behind.
The Lake District is here for wild swims, big walks, quiet moments, family adventures, first fell tops, rainy café stops and everything in between.
But it is also a living, working landscape. One shaped by nature, people, farming, heritage, weather and millions of visits every year.
Visit the Lakes your way. Walk, swim, paddle, wander, rest or explore somewhere new. Then leave something good behind. Visit and Volunteer brings together simple ways to give back, practical guides for better days out and ideas to help everyone feel more welcome in the Lake DistrictÂ
Small actions. Big difference.
You do not need to sign up for a full volunteer day to make a difference.
Micro volunteering is about doing something useful while you are already here. It can take a few minutes, fit into your walk or become part of how you visit.
You could:
- Pick up a few bits of litter on your route
- Stick to paths to protect fragile habitats
- Take a reusable bottle and use refill points
- Choose buses, trains, boats, bikes or walking where you can
- Support local businesses that give back to the Lakes
- Share responsible visiting tips with your friends
- Make a small donation to fund work on paths, water, wildlife and access

Little things matter here. With millions of people visiting the Lake District, everyday choices can help protect the places we all come to enjoy.
The outdoors is not always as easy as “just get out there”.
The Lakes should feel open to everyone
Transport, cost, confidence, mobility, kit, time, language and not knowing where to start can all get in the way. Some people have grown up visiting the Lakes. Others are arriving for the first time. Both belong here.
We want the Lake District to feel welcoming, useful and possible for more people. That means better information, more inclusive experiences and practical support for community-led projects that help people connect with nature, heritage and the outdoors.
Our new visit guides are designed to help with that. They are made for real people planning real days out, with simple information to help you visit in a way that works for you and cares for the place around you.
