A new chapter for hedgerows: launching the Real Hedge Fund
We are delighted to announce the launch of the Real Hedge Fund-a new grant programme by the Lake District Foundation dedicated to the restoration, planting and celebration of hedgerows across Cumbria.
Why hedgerows matter
Hedgerows are more than boundary lines between fields. They are vital lifelines in our landscape. They:
- provide habitat and corridors for wildlife and insects
- act as natural windbreaks, reducing soil erosion
- help capture carbon and support pollinators
- carry cultural and heritage value, linking us to generations of land stewardship
Yet many hedgerows have been lost, degraded or neglected. The Real Hedge Fund exists to reverse that trend and empower communities, landowners and organisations to act.
What the fund will do
- Support planting of native hedgerows
- Enable restoration and “gapping-up” of existing hedgerows
- Assist with maintenance to ensure longevity and ecological value
- Raise awareness and understanding of hedgerows’ ecological, cultural and climate roles
We aim to restore around 4 km of hedgerow across Cumbria in the coming cycles.
Who can apply
Eligibility is open to:
- Individuals
- Community groups
- Small charities
- Small and medium enterprises
Projects must be located within the Lake District or Cumbria and demonstrate clear environmental benefit.
Funding available
This round has £7,500 available for hedge-related projects. There is no fixed minimum amount, but the maximum is £1000. Smaller projects are especially encouraged, given our limited resources and our goal to spread impact.
How to apply

The impact we hope to see
We envision a Lake District where hedgerows:
- reconnect fragmented habitats and support greater biodiversity
- strengthen resilience of landscapes to climate change
- enhance local character and heritage
- inspire local people and landowners to take action
Each metre of hedgerow planted or restored is a step toward a richer, healthier and better-connected landscape.
