The Lake District Foundation (LDF) is proud to announce the addition of four ambassadors to champion the organisation and inspire positive action for nature, heritage and people. Each ambassador brings a unique focus and passion, contributing to a collective effort to promote adventure, sustainability, accessibility, culture and heritage throughout the Lake District.

Freya Hodson, the new adventure and sustainability ambassador, is a dedicated outdoor enthusiast, hiker and wild swimmer who has called Cumbria home for three years. As part of her role with the Keswick Tourism Association, Freya encourages responsible outdoor enjoyment, urging people to independently explore the region through careful planning and a commitment to safety. She promotes “leave no trace” principles and sustainable transport, inspiring visitors to connect with nature in mindful and respectful ways.

Polly Atkin joins as a culture and heritage ambassador. She is a poet and nonfiction writer who delves into themes of place, nature and disability, advocating for environmental and disability justice. Having relocated to Cumbria in the mid-2000s to study Romantic legacies and heritage tourism in the Lake District, Polly quickly became attuned to the impact of tourism on local landscapes, wildlife and communities. She strives to shift the narrative from what nature can do for humans to what humans can do for nature, with a particular focus on tackling water and light pollution. Polly works as a freelancer from her home in Grasmere, where she co-owns the Sam Read Bookseller.

Tom Smith, adventure ambassador, is a passionate mountain leader with years of experience guiding adventurers through the Lake District’s fells and valleys. His mission is to promote the region’s beauty and ensure that its fells and wild spaces remain accessible. Tom collaborates with local communities and conservation projects to promote a deeper understanding and appreciation of the Lake District.

Melissa Grace joins LDF as an adventure and accessibility ambassador. Melissa is an advocate for inclusivity in outdoor spaces. Living with Angelman Syndrome, Melissa faces many challenges including mobility and balance. Despite this, Melissa raises awareness through her treks and wheelchair adventures across the UK.  Anya Kuliszewski, Communication and Engagement Lead said,“Melissa’s deep love for the Lake District drives her passion for promoting accessibility and encouraging others to overcome their own challenges. Melissa is dedicated to ensuring that the Lake District remains a place where everyone can experience its wonders for generations to come”.

Chief Executive of LDF, Sarah Swindley, expressed her excitement, “Our new ambassadors bring incredible energy, expertise and perspectives to help us inspire even more people to connect and care with the Lake District. Together, we can make a positive impact on the region’s landscapes, culture and communities.”

The Lake District Foundation together with its ambassadors, continues to engage with partners, supporters and the broader community to champion the Lake District’s nature, heritage and diverse communities.
